Overview

What is Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that caps or encircles the vital tooth that has been destroyed by large cavities, cracks, trauma or even from root canal treatment. Crowns will be advised by dentists when minimal good tooth structure is left and situations where conventional fillings cannot hold up very well. Crowns not only restore teeth back to functions, but they can also protect them from fracturing under loads.

How do Crowns Work?

When a tooth is cracked, severely decayed or otherwise damaged, the dentist may recommend a dental crown. Dental crowns reinforce and protect the remaining tooth structure and can give you an aesthetic look. Crown is permanently cemented on the top of the tooth to become a part of it. Crowns are constructed of very resilient and durable materials and designed to endure the traumas of chewing effectively while keeping the tooth from breaking apart.

How do Bridges Work?

If you accidentally lose a tooth or some teeth, the dentist may recommend placing a dental bridge. A dental bridge is a structure including a ceramic tooth fused between two or more porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth that serve as anchors. These adjacent teeth are shaped to accommodate the crowns, and then a bridge is bonded securely over them.

Bridges are usually used in the circumstances that

  • There’s no post to place the crown that replaces the missing tooth
  • Multiple missing teeth are recovered by implantation

Understanding materials of Crowns and Bridges:

Full-Metal Crowns:

This  type of material have been conventionally used for many decades. They are known for strength, good margin adaptation, conservative tooth preparation and excellent longevity. Nowadays full-metal crowns are restoration of choice for posterior teeth in high load ( but unaesthetic ) areas and short clinical crowns.

Porcelain-Fused-to-metal ( PFM ) crowns:

These crowns are more esthetic-pleasing compared with the first type due to proclaim veneering on top of metal substructure in order to mimic tooth color. This makes them equipped with wider indications. As a result, they are routinely placed in most cases as they combine good qualities of good functions and acceptable aesthetics.

All-Ceramic Crowns:

All-ceramic crowns have been developed due to high esthetic demands in the past 30 years. High strength ceramics such as Lithium-disilicate,Alumina or Zirconia, are used as substructure instead of conventional metal alloys. Since the colors of the ceramic are more similar to tooth structure, not only the problem of dark metal showing from conventional porcelain-fused-to-metal prostheses can be minimized, but all-ceramic crowns can also mimic many characteristics of natural tooth structure. As a result all ceramic crowns and prostheses have become more and more popular these days. However with the nature of ceramic that can break under high loads, careful material selection, prosthetic design and case selection by experienced Dentist are keys to success in these cases. Additionally, thorough examination and details consideration are very crucial in order to achieve successful treatments.

4 Types of bridges:

  • Traditional dental bridges
  • Cantilever Bridges
  • Maryland bridges
  • Implant-supported bridge

When would I need a crown or bridge?

In which cases a crown is needed:

  • To stop a tooth from further cracking or fracturing
  • The surface of a tooth is damaged and cannot be recovered by filling or inlay/onlay
  • Protect a tooth from being weakened or cracked after root canal treatment
  • Cover discolored or worn teeth
  • To attach to a bridge replacing a missing tooth
